It was a grand Gothic revival building, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, but declared redundant by the church commissioners and demolished in We didn't learn from this either. The powers that be have since gone on to destroy many more of our heritage buildings since then.

The garrison gymnasium is on the far left with its lantern and chimneys that were removed sometime around The building was burned to the ground in the s and brought back to life with the help of insurance monies.

The swimming pool was yet to be built. Abbey Fields are directly ahead. With the Officers Mess on the right later to be the Sergeants Mess and later converted for housing by Taylor Wimpey inthe three stable blocks to the left have since been demolished and housing built all over this parade ground, together with what ius known as Butt Road Car Park.

Ltd at Preston, mounted on Brill 21E trucks. These had two 35hp motors. In two further trams were added to the fleet, identical to the others except that they had direct instead of reverse staircases. For the inaugural run on 28th. July the Lady Mayoress, Mrs E. Barritt drove tram no. The fleet was decommissioned inand the trams sold to Mr Moss, a builder, for use as site huts. In Colchester, the trams operated out of a depot in Magdalen Street in the centre of town, where they were also cleaned and maintained.

Trams were quiet, economical on fuel, and pollution free. The only disadvantage was the overhead wires and the rails - the latter could produce a problem like that so vividly depicted in the film Genevieve, when the veteran car's wheels stuck in the tram rails and it was guided the wrong way like a railway wagon! The trams were a significant feature of the town scene, both before and after the First World War, until they were replaced with motor buses. Colchester Oyster Feast with Frank Cant advertisement.
